At Naper Dental Center, our doctors and staff work closely with the patient to determine his or her exact needs and expectations. Based on careful evaluation, we then can recommend realistic options such as porcelain veneers/bonding, a dental crown, dental implants and/or dental bridge work, orthodontics and tooth whitening as needed. Our #1 main goal is to help give you a beautiful smile!

Cosmetic Bonding

Bonding is a composite resin filling placed in the back teeth as well as the front teeth. Composites are the solution for restoring decayed teeth, making cosmetic improvements and even changing the color of your teeth or the reshaping of teeth. Bonding will lighten any stains you may have, close up minor gaps and can be used to correct crooked teeth. Basically, bonding will cover any natural flaws applying a thin coating of a plastic material on the front surface of your teeth.

Facts about Cosmetic Bonding

The dental bonding procedure utilizes a composite resin and is used for a variety of structural as well as cosmetic purposes. One can draw a parallel between dental bonding materials and a sculptor’s clay. A very mild etching solution is applied to your teeth to create very small crevices in the tooth’s enamel structure. These small crevices provide a slightly rough surface permitting a durable resin to bond materials to your teeth. The resin is then placed on your tooth and high-intensity light cures the resins onto your tooth’s surface – with each individual layer of resin hardening in just minutes. When the last coat has been applied to your tooth, the bonded material is then sculpted to fit your tooth and finely polished.

Why cosmetic bonding instead of veneers?

Unlike porcelain veneers, bonding does not reduce the tooth’s original structure. It is quick, painless and relatively inexpensive. Bonding generally requires very little drilling and most treatments can be performed in a single visit without the use of anesthetic.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap?these two anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth?and a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.

How is dental bridge accomplished?

The dentist will start by preparing your teeth on either side of the space for the false tooth. You will be given a mild anesthetic to numb the area, and the dentist will remove the an area of each abutment (teeth on either side of the space) to accommodate for the thickness of the crown. When these teeth already have fillings, part of the filling may be left in place to help as a foundation for the crown.

The dentist will then make an impression, which will serve as the model from which the bridge, false tooth and crowns will be made by a dental laboratory. A temporary bridge will be placed for you to wear while your bridge is being made until your next visit. This temporary bridge will serve to protect your teeth and gums.

Your dentist may have you use a Flipper appliance. A Flipper is a false tooth to temporarily take the place of a missing tooth before the permanent bridge is placed. A Flipper can be attached via either a wire or a plastic piece that fits in the roof of your mouth. Flippers are meant to be a temporary solution while awaiting the permanent bridge.

On your second appointment, the temporary bridge will be removed. Your new permanent bridge will be fitted and checked and adjusted for any bite discrepancies. Your new bridge will then be cemented to your teeth.

What Types of Dental Bridges are Available?

There are three main types of bridges:

  • Traditional bridges – involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics.
  • Cantilever bridges – are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
  • Maryland bonded bridges – (also called a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge) are made of porcelain teeth and gums supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth.

How Do I Care for My Bridges?

It is important to keep your remaining teeth healthy and strong as the success of the bridge (depending on the type selected) depends on the solid foundation offered by the surrounding teeth. Brushing twice a day and cleaning between your teeth daily helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease that can lead to tooth loss. Your dentist or dental hygienist can demonstrate how to properly brush and clean between teeth. Keeping a regular cleaning schedule will help diagnose problems at an early stage when treatment has a better prognosis. Selecting a balanced diet for proper nutrition is also important.

Dental Crowns

Teeth are often restored with fillings of silver amalgam or composite plastics. These materials can often accomplish the aim of replacing the part of the tooth that has been lost in a strong and good-looking manner. However, there comes a point where the damage to the tooth has removed too much structure to hold a filling or the tooth is cracked. The restoration must be done with the use of a dental crown. This dental restoration technique involves using a tooth-like covering or “cap” that is placed over a carefully prepared existing tooth, to strengthen, restore or improve the appearance of your natural tooth.

Facts about Dental Crowns

Crowns are a type of dental restoration which, when cemented into place, fully cup over the portion of a tooth which lies at and above the gum line. In comparison, fillings are dental restorations that are used to fill in or cover over just a portion of a tooth. Since dental crowns encase the entire visible aspect of a tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooth’s new outer surface.

Crowns can be made out of:

  • porcelain (or some other ceramic material
  • gold (or metal alloys)
  • combination of both

How are dental crowns used to restore a tooth?

Since a dental crown cemented into place essentially becomes the new outer surface of the tooth it is easy to imagine how the placement of a crown can restore a tooth to its original shape. Dental crowns are often made for teeth that have worn excessively, have broken, or else have had large portions destroyed by tooth decay.

Conceivably the placement of a dental filling could, as an alternative, be used as a means to restore a tooth’s shape. Dental crowns however offer a big advantage to your dentist over dental fillings by way of the fact that they are fabricated “away from your mouth”. By this we simply mean that dental crowns are fabricated in a dental laboratory (by a dental technician who uses plaster molds your teeth made by your dentist). Dental fillings, in comparison, are created “in your mouth” by way of your dentist placing the filling material directly upon your tooth.

When a dental crown is made the dental laboratory technician can visualize and examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements, from a variety of angles, and sculpt your dental crown so it has the perfect anatomy. In some cases this anatomy will be even more ideal than your tooth’s original shape. When placing a dental filling a dentist has less control over the final outcome of the shape of your tooth because it is often difficult for them to visualize, evaluate, and access to the tooth on which they are working.

Can dental crowns improve my cosmetic appearance?

Since dental crowns cup over teeth, any dental crown that has a porcelain surface can be used as a way to idealize the cosmetic appearance of a tooth. Possibly you have heard it said (especially in past decades) that such-and-such movie star has had their teeth “capped” (the term “cap” used here is equivalent to the term “dental crown”). This simply means that the person has obtained their “Hollywood smile” by way of having dental crowns placed.

Actually, getting your teeth “capped” so just to improve their appearance can at times be a very poor choice. Dental crowns are best utilized as a way to improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth when the crown simultaneously serves other purposes also, such as restoring a tooth to its original shape (repairing a broken tooth) or strengthening a tooth (covering over a tooth which has an excessively large filling).

In general, dental crowns probably should not be used as a means to improve the appearance of a tooth if there is any other alternative dental treatment that could equally satisfactorily achieve the same cosmetic results. This is because a dentist must grind a significant portion of a tooth away when a dental crown is made. If a more conservative dental procedure could equally well improve the tooth’s appearance, such as a porcelain veneer, dental bonding, or even just teeth whitening, then it is usually best to consider that treatment option first.

Dentures

Dentures are removable implants that simulate the look and function of the tooth and its surrounding tissue. Most dentures are constructed with acrylic resins along with some composite materials. Dentures can be put in place after a surgery to remove all teeth in the jaw, but the usual practice involves waiting for the gums to heal properly.

Various Types of Dentures

Complete Dentures – replace all of the natural teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or both, sitting on the soft (gum) tissue of the mouth that covers the bone ridge. Your dentist may use several different procedures to make sure your denture will fit the shape of your mouth, and provide the necessary support for your face. The design of the complete denture and position of the teeth will restore good speech and appearance.

Removable Partial Dentures – are used when there are still natural teeth left. The missing teeth are replaced by this type of denture in an effective and esthetic design that uses both the soft tissue ridge and teeth to hold it securely in place. This tooth replacement is removable by the patient, which makes cleaning easier. The new teeth will look natural and are made from plastic or porcelain (ceramic) materials. The foundation of the partial denture can be plastic or a combination of plastic and metal. Because removable partial dentures use teeth and soft tissue for support, you may be given the opportunity to choose a variety of treatment plans.

How do I care for my dentures?

When you receive your new denture your dentist will make sure that it fits properly. However, your treatment is not quite finished as there is always a period of adjustment to become accustomed to your new denture. Your dentist is committed to making you comfortable and is happy to adjust the fit of your dentures. Over time, the gums and bone supporting the denture will shrink causing the denture to become loose. Periodic visits to your dentist are necessary to check the fit of your denture. It may be required that your denture be adjusted and refit. It is also important to check the overall oral health of your mouth to help ensure optimal results from your treatment.

Dental Veneers

Even a subtle change in your smile can make a dramatic difference in the way you look and feel and on your social outlook!  Dental Veneers are an excellent cosmetic remedy for a variety of dental conditions that affect the appearance of the front teeth.  Durable and color-stable, veneers are, in many cases, the perfect way to restore the natural function and beauty of your teeth, so you can smile with confidence.

The Facts About Dental Veneers

Porcelain veneers, often alternatively termed dental veneers or dental porcelain laminates, are wafer-thin shells of porcelain which are bonded onto the front side of teeth to make a cosmetic improvement in their appearance. Porcelain veneers are routinely used to idealize teeth that are discolored, worn, chipped, or misaligned. Though veneers are not suitable for every patient, they are a cosmetic alternative for a variety of dental conditions affecting the front teeth, including:

  • closing spaces between the teeth.
  • restoring broken or chipped teeth.
  • covering unsightly, stained or washed-out fillings, whitening permanently stained or discolored teeth.
  • correcting uneven or crooked teeth

Advantages and Benefits of Veneers

When your smile is disfigured by decay, abrasion, chipping, breakage or imperfect development, our goal is to restore its natural beauty, so you can smile with confidence. At one time, resin fillings or crowns were the only available treatment for the above types of conditions. Today, a third alternative is available-one with proven results!

There are many benefits and advantages to having porcelain veneers applied to your front teeth. These may include any or all of the following considerations:

  1. Only a small amount of natural tooth structure (if any) is removed during the procedure.
  2. A healthy, natural look is achieved with little or no discomfort.
  3. Veneers are often less expensive than alternative procedures.
  4. Veneers are strong, durable and color-stable.

How Are Veneers Different from Fillings or Crowns?

A composite resin filling is used when only a small amount of tooth structure needs replacing or repair. A full crown is indicated when a tooth has had root canal treatment or when a substantial amount of the entire tooth structure (enamel) has been lost. A porcelain veneer is indicated when a portion of the front surface of a tooth needs a “face lift.”

How Are Porcelain Veneers Created and Attached?

The doctor will preparing the front side of the tooth by removing .5 to .7 millimeters of the tooths’ enamel, then we will take an impression of your tooth to make an exact copy. This copy of your tooth will then be sent to a dental laboratory that will in turn make your veneer. Once we have received the veneer, we apply a tooth-colored liquid bonding material, which helps the veneer adhere to your natural teeth.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening or Bleaching is one of the easiest way to make that ordinary smile extraordinary. Over the years, teeth become stained by many of the foods we eat such as coffee, tea, wine, soda and tobacco. These stains can be removed quickly and safely with little or no discomfort by using bleaching treatments. At Naper Dental Center, we have many different options to remove these stains from your teeth.

The Basics Behind Stained Teeth

Your teeth are made up of an inner dentin layer and a hard outer enamel layer, which protects the teeth. When you put stuff in your mouth — food, cigarette smoke, coffee, etc. — another layer gradually forms on top of the enamel layer. Basically, the foreign material accumulates to form a pellicle film over the enamel layer and stains the teeth.

A dentist can clean away this film, through aggressive scaling and chemical treatments. Even brushing your teeth can knock out some of it — brushing with the abrasive toothpaste cleans the tooth in the same sort of way scrubbing with an abrasive pad cleans a dish. “Whitening toothpastes” are designed to work even harder on this layer. The problem is, as this pellicle layer sits on your teeth for years and years, the foreign material gets into the enamel. Simply put, enamel is porous, which means staining agents can work their way down into the tooth, where you can’t simply scour them away. The deeper stains are basically harmless, but many people find them unattractive.

This is where true tooth whiteners come in. Basically, the whiteners use bleaching chemicals to get into the pores of the tooth enamel and set off a chemical reaction (specifically, an oxidation reaction) that breaks apart the staining compounds. Most tooth whiteners use one of two chemical agents: carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide and when used in the mouth will enter the porous enamel layer and helps remove the stains.

Teeth Whitening Options

In order to provide the best care of our patients we provide many different types of whitening options. Currently we offer: In Office Treatment, Custom Tray Whitening, and Whitening Strips.

In Office Treatment
For in office treatment the Doctor will apply the whitening agent to the patients teeth. Once the gel is applied the whitening process will take about 20-30 min. This application can be repeated up to 3 times during a whitening session. With this procedure the effects can be seen immediately; however, it may take more than one session to achieve the desired results.
Home Bleaching Trays
To begin the at-home procedure, the dentist takes impressions (molds) of your mouth, and then has soft, custom mouth trays made. To administer the treatment, you put a thin ribbon of the gel into the tray and wear it for two hours during the day, or while sleeping. This treatment can be done until you have reached your desired whiteness.
Whitening Strips
Whitening strips are positioned across the user’s teeth and then gently pressed into place to insure maximum contact between the whitener and the surface of each tooth that will receive treatment. Teeth whitening strips are typically worn for 30 minutes a day, twice a day. The number of strips contained in each whitening kit varies depending on the concentration of the whitener that has been applied to them. Our office provides a concentration not available over the counter in drug stores. This treatment can be done until you have reached your desired whiteness.

Is Bleaching Safe?

Over a decade of research has proven bleaching and other whitening methods to be both safe and effective. Several products in the market today have shown no adverse effects on teeth or gums in substantial clinical and laboratory testing. Be sure to look for clinically proven products, follow directions and consult with your dentist.
